Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic will be out for at least 5 weeks due to a calf injury. Vidic suffered the injury playing against West Brom for Manchester United in their opening Premier League fixture. United eventually won the match 2-1 but lost both of their central defenders. This is a huge blow for the current champions especially keeping in mind the coming fixture list. Manchester United face Tottenham next at Old Trafford and Vidic and Ferdinand will be missed badly. At first was thought that Vidic would be out for two weeks or so, but Sir Alex Ferguson said – “It is difficult to say with calves but it is longer than we thought.”
Vidic’s partner Rio Ferdinand also left the field due to injury. It was being feared to be a serious injury which could force Ferdinand to be sidelined for long. But it is being said that Ferdinand’s injury isn’t that serious. He will be fit again within the end of August. Sir Alex said – “Rio is not as bad as we thought and he could be ready for our game with Arsenal, I don’t think he’ll be ready for Monday, but it’s amazing how assessments can change in the space of a few days. “
There is some good news for Sir Alex as French left back Patrice Evra who missed the game against West Brom due to injury, is fit for selection again. Ferguson now have to choose between Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans to start the game against Tottenham. With right back Rafael Da Silva already injured for 10 weeks due to a dislocated shoulder, United injury worries intensified at the start of the season. With a not so assured De Gea at goal it will be interesting to see how the inexperienced United defense cope against a strong Spurs side.
