On Saturday, Sebastian Vettel again went back to his winning ways with securing a pole by the end of the qualifying session at the Belgian Grand Prix. He ended up faster than Lewis in the second place by almost half a second. Mark Webber came in third behind Lewis.
Felipe Massa was a close fourth in the Ferrari with Nico Roserg in a Mercedes GP behind him in fifth. Jamie Alguersuari in the Torro Rossoand Bruno Senna in a Renault, both, came in a surprisingly sixth and seventh respectively. Fernando Alonso ended up a poor eighth and Jenson Button even worse coming in at thirteenth position. The debut of the Brazilian driver, Bruno Senna, nephew of the late F1 legend, Aryton Senna, was impressive as he ended seventh for Renault, on the grid for the race.
Button at the end of the qualifying said that his miserable performance in the qualifying was due to a “miscommunication” with his team, saying that he choose to cool his tyres not realizing that he won’t be having enough time in the end to do another flying lap.
Force India’s Paul Di Resta ended a disappointing 18th. He too had a problem when his team called him in before the end of the first qualifying session, believing that he had enough time to make through in to the next stage, which didn’t turn out to be. The other car of Force India, driven by Adrian Sutil met with a big crash which saw the qualifying being halted temporarily.
The highlight of the whole qualifying was the controversy which engulfed Lewis again along with Pastor Maldonado. The McLaren car seemed to bang wheels with the Williams as they were racing down the Bus Stop chicane. It did seem like Maldonado drove into Lewis and even the commentator thought that the Williams driver deserved a penalty. Lewis was in the process of making a fast lap, failing which would have seen him not able to make it to the third qualifying session.
It remains to be seen if the Red Bulls have managed to pull back the advantage they had in the first half of the season, into the second half. The McLaren of Lewis certainly looks to be fast enough to give a serious fight to Vettel and the Red Bulls. Ferrari needs to put in a little more effort to be able to give competition to the Red Bulls and McLarens. The race at the Belgian GP will answer a lot of these questions for sure.
