Indian team is looking no better than an ordinary school team. They came into the series against the England side with real high expectations as the top test team to challenge them at home. On the contrary, England has beaten them so convincingly that it really puts a lot of doubt as to how good our players really are.
It is the occasion of playing in the home country of cricket that got to the players, is it the pressure to maintain the top spot, is it the fatigue, is it just that they could not adjust to the conditions, that too over three test matches or is it something else? What is it that has made the World Champions, the team which was being feared to dominate world cricket in the near future, has failed so miserably. One really can’t get his head around the fact that a team with some of the best names in cricket packed in a one, is waiting to lose a test series, in such a humiliating manner, on top of it, is being led by the best captain, that India has ever produced.
Sreesanth in one of the interviews recently has confessed that the team is going through a very bad phase. They are getting a taste of their own medicine. He mentioned that there was no lack of effort from the guys in the team but it was just that England is playing like the number one team. He added that it’s a challenge to bowl to them. They are playing very well and not looking to play at the deliveries that are outside the off-stump. England has also been very aggressive, so it has been difficult for the Indian bowlers to contain the flow of runs.
India looks at every test afresh in the hope that they would be able to come up, out of the phase that has bogged them down. But every time they try to attack the England line up, with whatever motivation left in them, England seems to come back with a stronger reply. This has seemed to deflate the team spirit. The weak bowling department has also seemed to affect the batting which has been very poor.
The worst part has been that the senior players have not themselves been able to play any important innings in the test, apart from the exception of Rahul Dravid, and so they have not been in a position to motivate the younger players on tour. The team seemed to have lost that spark, that hunger that was there in and around the World Cup. The reason could perhaps be that the test format is suffering due to the fact that the players today have been motivated by the IPL and ODIs. Test requires a whole different approach towards cricket. It will be very interesting to see how the young generation takes up the challenge of performing at the test level once the names like Dravid, Sachin, Laxman start to phase out in a few years’ time.
