It just couldn’t have been that Serena Williams would be left unseeded. It had been well over a year, equivalent to a light year in the game world that Serena stepped onto court. After returning from an injury, Serena first won her game against Maria Sharapova in the Stanford Classic on Thursday with a 6-1, 6-3 win and then again on the match Sunday against Marion Bartoli.
In a game that lasted for 1 hour and 22 minutes, the winning side’s score ended as 7-5, 6-1. This would be Serena’s 38th win in her career. Bartoli, on the other hand had won Stanford in 2009. Serena is expected to secure a spot in the first 80 of the rankings. Serena said that she hated seeing her ranking in three digits and was wanted to get it down to a single digit. The ranking, as is known, is bound to change for the champion as the US Open is still to come.
Third-seed Bartoli said that her favorite for the US Open would be Serena Williams and she will perform even better in the upcoming competition. Bartoli had won Serena in the earlier rounds of Wimbledon in straight sets, earlier this year. Thus beating Bartoli made this revenge even sweeter for Serena.
To Serena Williams, this win had been in the waiting for a very long time as she said that she was desperate to hear that appreciation from the crowd.
“It’s so awesome to be back and to be a part of those moments”, she said and then adding that she took complete pride in the win and her effort.
This was her first win since last year’s Wimbledon. She once again proves to be a strong contender for the US Open after she owned the Stanford Classic. Serena took a yearlong break as she suffered from a foot injury as well as pulmonary embolism, blood clots in her lungs, and made her comeback with this tournament.
Earlier, Serena said that she didn’t take her injuries seriously until Venus stepped in. She thanked Venus and said that she was healing because of her sister and that she was the one who pointed out how serious the situation could have gotten.
Her contenders agree that she is only to get better from here onwards. Bartoli said that each match gets better for her and she knew that this game would be different right from when the match begins.
The other contenders are sure to watch out for Serena in the US Open as we all know that the only thing as dangerous as newcomers is comebacks.
