In what comes as a shock move, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed that the club are in talks with Manchester City over a move for forward Emmanuel Adebayor. Spurs have been linked with a bevy of strikers this season and in the winter transfer window of last season, but nothing came through.
Reports have claimed that the two clubs have beenin talks over a deal for the hit man, and further reports on Tuesday suggested that Spurs were close to sealing a loan move.City will pay half of Adebayor’s wages during the loan spell and Tottenham will have the option to buy him for £12 million at the end of the season.
“‘Arry” Redknapp told reporters: “The chairman (Daniel Levy) is talking to Manchester City about the player.
“Where the negotiations are at, I genuinely don’t know.”
The former Togo international fell out with City boss Roberto Mancini last season. With the arrivals of Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero (who starred in a 30 minute debut cameo, scoring two goals and assisted one for City in their opening game) have only pushed Adebayor to the bottom of the pecking order. Mancini made it clear that the Togolese forward had no future at the club.
Adebayor spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Madrid, where he scored twice against Tottenham in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash between the two teams at the Bernabeu. And Adebayor looked set to complete a move to the Spanish giants, but Real looked for more lucrative players.
Adebayor, once a player for Tottenham’s derby rivals Arsenal, was strongly booed and chants were raised against him when he played at the White Hart Lane. The reaction of Spurs’ fans for this revelation will be expected to be in the negative.
Tottenham have sold striker Robbie Keane to L.A Galaxy for a fee of £3.5 million. The futures of Pavlyuchenko, Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar also hang in the balance. But star man and key player Luka Modric looks set to stay at the White Hart Lane for at least one more season.
