There were punches and fists fights and kicks except this wasn’t some street fight. Thursday night on Beijing’s court had little basketball and much more of brawl between the Washington’s Georgetown Hoyas and China’s Bayi Military Rockets. There was even a chair thrown at the players’ turmoil!
This was supposed to go on as a friendly match however it ended with nothing like one as players from both the teams erupted into a clash with blows and hits on the opponent team’s players. Not only them but the crowd threw water bottles, wrappers on the players and coaches as the game was called off.
There is no exact reason that was found out to be the cause of the fight however it is linked with Biden’s visit to Beijing as his agenda is to talk out the US-Chinese relations. Biden landed in Beijing a day before the match and was present to see another basketball game of Georgetown versus a different Chinese team.
The news was not shown on many of the national news channels as the censor board tried their best to haze out the whole episode. There are several games that are to be held as a part of the US-Chinese friendship event that has been going on in the country. The Hoya are in their 10-day visit to China in which they are scheduled to play in Beijing and Shanghai.
The officials say that the incident was a “small one” and the moment has thankfully passed. He also said that both the sides have made their peace now.
“It is my understanding that this morning the skies have cleared,” he said. “The two sides have made up.”
He said the US team were seen-off at the airport by the Chinese and the teams also exchanged mementos.
The fight was taken in to twitter where the fans from both the teams rattled about the other accusing the opponent side of starting the incident. There were many fans who tweeted that the goodwill of the country was gone and also that the South China Sea tension is the reason that such an unfortunate and unethical incident took place. Fans from both the sides took jabs at each other.
The coaches expressed their regret over the issue and said that hopefully the incident would not spoil the relationship between the two nations as it is already fragile.
Hopefully the friendly matches that are to come will have more of basketball.
