English Premier League side Liverpool’s preparations for the new season have been dealt with a blow as they will be without influential captain Steven Gerrard for the month of August and early September. Gerrard seems to have aggravated the problems with his groin injury, as antibiotic treatment for him has begun to heal the groin infection.
A statement on liverpoolfc.tv, Liverpool FC’s official website, read, “Steven Gerrard has begun a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection related to an ongoing groin problem.
“He is expected to remain in hospital for several days while the precautionary procedure is completed. He is expected to be available for selection in September.”
The current injury means Jamie Carragher will now have to start the season as the Liverpool skipper, which he has been doing since Stevie G was sidelined due to injury in the last two months of the previous season. Gerrard then went on to have a successful surgery on his groin, on the advice of the club’s medical chief Dr. Peter Brukner, which needed a considerably long recovery period. And the club said that he would be available for pre-season.
Gerrard’s groin problems are not new as he has continued to struggle with them since the last few seasons, which has led to a dip in his appearances & also his form, particularly the one which mesmerized the audiences in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
With Gerrard’s recovery being delayed, it looks like manager Kenny Dalglish would not push him until he recovers fully, particularly because a lot of options are available to the Scot in central midfield, starting from the existing players to the new recruits Henderson, Adam & Downing.
In the summer break, Gerrard had expressed his feelings on how he was looking forward to the next season & that his recovery was going as per schedule. He also stated that this time he was feeling more fit compared to the past few seasons. And, from his statements, it seemed as if the football world was going to witness another fantastic season, probably the best, from their own Steven Gerrard. Sadly, that seems to be a remote possibility now. The club, and of course the fans, will hope that their skipper will recover in time and come ‘back with a bang!’
