Liverpool’s left back situation seems to have been finally solved with reports suggesting that the club have reached an agreement with Newcastle on a fee for talented Spanish winger/ full back Jose Enrique.
Newcastle reportedly will receive an initial fee of €6.7 million and then a further €2.3 million in add-ons depending on the player’s performance. The deal is worth approximately around €9.2 million.
Enrique will be given permission to negotiate personal terms with Liverpool once a formal deal is struck between the two clubs. Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli expects the deal to be completed before the turn of the week.
With Enrique making his intent of leaving the club clear in the past weeks via Twitter, owner Mike Ashley has decided to cash in on the Spaniard while he can. Enrique’s contract with the club expires next season and Ashley is wary of letting him go free.
The Toons will now look towards City’s unwanted Wayne Bridge and Aston Villa’s Stephen Warnock as potential targets to fill in at the left back situation.
On the other hand, the Anfield hierarchy and faithful will hope that the latest addition to the squad will result in an improved solidity in their defence. The pre-season friendlies have all been disappointing for the Reds, losing 3-0 to Hull and Galatasaray, drawing 3-3 at little known Valerenga.
Enrique’s versatility will also mean that he can be used as a winger, providing much needed balls into the box for Andy Carroll’s giant physique, with Stewart Downing operating on the other side of the flank.
Glen Johnson proved last season that he was comfortable enough playing at left back, and youngster Martin Kelly, who deeply impressed at right back will take over Glen J’s usual position.
