UEFA Euro 2012 is coming up and there are enough uncapped English talent who can stake a claim for a place in the England squad. Lets see some of the most promising footballers among them:
- Ryan Shawcross – He is a rock at the back for Stoke. He is also the club captain. A tough tackling no nonsense defender. With Rio Ferdinand aging and John Terry getting pedestrian day by day Shawcross can hope for an England call up sooner rather than later.
- Chris Smalling – He has shown immense growth in the past few years. I guess he is the most improved player in England now. Smalling filled in for injured Ferdinand last season and he did exceedingly well. As Ferdinand is getting older Smalling now will get even more chance to prove himself at Manchester United. If he continues to progress as he has done over the past few years then he could be flying with the England team for Euro 2012.
- Daniel Sturridge – Because of Chelsea’s array of world class strikers Sturridge didn’t get much chance to prove himself. But last season’s latter half he was loaned to Bolton and boy he showed how lethal he can be in front of goal. He scored 8 goals in 12 premier league matches for Bolton. As Capello doesn’t have much striking options to choose from rather than Wayne Rooney, Andy Carrol and Jermain Defoe, Sturridge can sneak into the England team.
- Phil Jones – Another new Manchester United recruit. He is known for his versatility. He can play in defence and also he can play as a defensive midfielder. He is also considered to be one of the best prospects of English football. If he makes a good partnership with Chris Smalling then we can see both of them in place of Terry Ferdinand.
- Tom Cleverly – Cleverly had a brilliant season with Wigan last term. He not only played well but scored some very important goals for them which finally helped them to stay in the Premiership. He is a technically gifted player and has great vision. He has impressed Sir Alex Ferguson so much that he resisted the temptation of buying a replacement for Paul Scholes.
- Jack Rodwell – Once dubbed as the new Frank Lampard, Rodwell is also a very versatile player. He can play either at the back or in the midfield. Injuries have hampered his progress a bit at Everton but he is still very talented and highly rated.
- Martin Kelly – England doesn’t have much option at the right back position Glen Johnson who is the first choice right back for England played the latter part of last season as left back and Martin Kelly played as a right back for Liverpool. So it leaves with only Micah Richards for the right back position. Any injury to him might force Capello to include Martin Kelly in the English team.
- Scott Dann – He built a strong, rigid and stubborn defensive partnership with fellow Englishman Roger Johnson. Dann who is now relegated to the Championship with Birmingham is attracting interest of many top Premier League clubs. If he continues to perform well he also can see himself in the fray.
- David Stockdale – Though Joe Hart has emerged as the number one custodian for the three lions but still there is a lack of good backup goalies. With likes of error prone Robert Green and inconsistent Scott Carson at helm David Stockdale is right up there in the queue.
Last year Jack Wilshere was uncapped. Now he is considered one of the hottest properties of English football. I believe that some of these above mentioned footballers can also follow his footsteps to glory.
