The second week of the Premier League gets underway tonight, with one of the most eye-catching fixture to take place so early in the season – the match between Arsenal & Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
Liverpool will enter the match as favourites this time, as Arsene Wenger’s side have got a few injury problems and the departure of key players skipper Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Eboue, along with the possible sale of midfielder Samir Nasri. It looks like Robin van Persie will be handed the armband now to lead the Gunners. It would be interesting to see if he can create an impact.
The visitors have a bunch of quality midfielders in their starting line-up (and on bench as well), with only Steven Gerrard absent as he recovers from a groin problem. The Reds will rely on Copa America winner Luis Suarez to put the ball into the net along with Andy Carroll, who performance will be boosted by the services from new signings covering the left flank – Stewart Dowing, Charlie Adam and and former Newcastle United teammate Jose Enrique.
Head-to-Head (Last season):
Liverpool have not been able to register a win against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium since the Gunners shifted there from Highbury back in 2005. Last season’s two fixtures between these two saw two equally-contested draws, with the first one coming as a frustration to Liverpool and the same happened with Arsenal in the latter one.
The match at Anfield finished at 1-1 under Roy Hodgson with Arsenal’s Maroune Chamakh cancelling out David Ngog’s opener in the final minutes, thanks to a howler by Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Another interesting thing in the game was the early sending off of Liverpool’s new signing Joe Cole, who was brought in from Chelsea for a free transfer.
The reverse fixture took place at the Emirates, with the visitors playing under Kenny Dalglish. With both teams looking equally strong, the game seemed to be heading to a draw. That did happen eventually, but not before the drama in the final minutes of the match. Robin van Persie scored a penalty for Arsenal in the first few minutes of injury time & the game seemed to be over at 2-1. But, Dalglish proved that his side were equally good when Dirk Kuyt converted a spot-kick just two minutes later, thus ending the contest at 2-2.
