Uruguay striker Diego Forlan has reaffirmed his worldwide fans that he is set to complete a switch to Italian giants Inter Milan, as he ends a 4-year stay at his current club Atletico de’ Madrid.
Forlan called for a press conference in Madrid, when he was leaving Vicente Calderon for Milan to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with the personnel at San Siro. With no issues related to the former Villareal forward’s fitness, it looks like the deal is 100 per cent done.
While announcing his decision to leave Spain in the press conference, Forlan expressed his delight at joining the defending FIFA Club World Cup Champions, and that too at an age of 32. The Copa America winner heaped praise on Massimo Moratti for the big role played by the Inter President in successfully completing this deal.
The FIFA World Cup 2010 Golden Ball winner said, “I am going to a great club and there is a big challenge ahead of me. I want to thank Massimo Moratti for this chance.
“I have already spoken with Esteban Cambiasso and Diego Milito, they are my friends. I know Serie A having watched many games on television and I am very happy to be playing in Italy after my time in the Premier League and (the La) Liga.”
He said further, “I am going to play for a great team. I liked the project as well as their will to have me. I have a great will to start and changing [teams] will give me new motivation. It’s not always that you get the chance to play for a great club at 32, and so for this reason I want to thank Inter and president Moratti.”
Forlan then spoke about his time at Atletico and the admiration he had for the Madrid-based club. “I will always support Atletico Madrid and it was an honour to play here. I enjoyed four great years, fantastic years and I want to wish the team all the best”, he added.
The arrival of Inter Milan will help Inter Milan to fill the void left by experienced Cameron striker Samuel Eto’o, who recently joined Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. Serie A football fans will hope that Forlan will light up the league with his fantastic performances, just as he did in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Copa America 2011 Final, which Uruguay won by 3-0 to become the most successful club in the tournament’s history.
