Rising star and Uruguayan Sebastian Coates’ representatives have travelled to England to conduct talks with interested suitors Liverpool and Manchester City, both of whom are looking for reinforcements.
According to Uruguayan newspaper Ovacion, Liverpool are in the process of preparing a bid of £3.64 million for the centre-back, who plays for Nacional and was impressive in the Copa America, and was recognised with the Best Young Player trophy.
The sale of Greek defender Sotiros Kyrgiakos has made it important for manager Kenny Dalglish to look for cover in the central defence area. Martin Skrtel, veteran warhorse Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger are the only remaining defenders available, though youth academy graduate Danny Wilson has also impressed.
Liverpool are hopeful that the presence of Luis Suarez, another Uruguayan – who won the Best Player trophy at the Copa America – will convince Coates to make Anfield his new home.
Cash rich Manchester City are also making amends to sign the 20-year-old and Roberto Mancini is also looking to make more defenders available for himself, with Kolo Toure being banned in the previous season. City are also close to signing Arsenal playmaker Samir Nasri after the club agreed terms with Arsenal, and also with Nasri himself.
Coates himself has stated on his Twitter account that Liverpool and City are interested in his services. While other reports have claimed that Coates is keener on playing for a club in the Champions League, but the presence of Suarez can tip Coates’ favour towards Liverpool.
