Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was at Arsenal’s training ground to undergo a medical to finalise his £12 million transfer from Southampton.
The teenager, who has been followed avidly by Wenger, arrived at the club’s Colney headquarters, where he will complete the formalities of a medical before putting pen on paper for a long-term contract.
Arsenal and Southampton have reached apparently have agreed to a £12m fee, which will include an initial payment of £6.5m and then a further £5.5m based on performance (add-ons).
The deal is expected to be done within 24 hours provided no last minute breakdown occurs. Arsenal tried signing the midfielder in the winter transfer window, but failed to reach an agreement, courtesy some typical intervention on the part of Alex Ferguson.
Oxlade-Chamberlain visited Arsenal’s training ground in January and set his sights on a move to north London because he believes he will get more opportunities in the medium and short term. The two Manchester clubs and Liverpool all made concerted moves to sign the youngster but he had his heart set on playing for the Gunners.
Oxlade-Chamberlain and his father, Mark, both went public in their desire to speed up the move from Southampton, who were promoted to the Championship last season, but the Saints were in no rush to sell their prize asset.
Wenger had promised to bring in more signings, after the arrival of winger Gervinho and young defender Jenkinson. The fans’ irritation at the dearth of trophies for a protracted period seems to have encouraged bringing in players.
While Samir Nasri’s high profile transfer saga seems to have come to an end and the Frenchman likely to stay on at the Emirates, Captain Cesc Fabregas’ future still remains uncertain.
