Alberto Aquilani has joined Italian champions AC Milan on a season-long loan from Liverpool, which includes a mandatory right-to-buy clause should the midfielder play more than 25 games for the Serie A champions. After weeks of speculation about Aquilani’s future, this move comes not as a big surprise. It is Aquilani’s second season in row playing out on a loan.
The Italy international joined Liverpool in 2009 from Roma for a fee of 20 million pounds but struggled to make an immediate impact in his first term and was subsequently shipped out to Juventus on loan. The 27 year old has passed a medical with AC Milan and will arrive in time for the start of the new campaign.
“It’s a great move for Alberto. He’s got his wife and kid over there. It was difficult for him here,” Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish told their official website.
“When he came back his pre-season training was excellent. We gave him a few games; he did well in those games. But the problem for us was trying to get him in the team. We couldn’t get him in the team.
“Obviously everybody wants to play and Alberto is moving over to a fantastic football club. He goes there with the best wishes of everyone and we hope it works out for him, because he was never a problem in any way, shape or form.”
A statement from AC Milan read: “AC Milan announces it has acquired Alberto Aquilani on loan with an option to buy the player’s rights from Liverpool. Aquilani has signed a contract until June 30, 2014.”
It is being assumed that the mysterious Mr. X Milan’s coach Allegri has been referring to is Aquilani. This will come as a disappointment for Milan fans, as the team had been previously linked with a lot of high profile players, and Aquilani is more of a last resort option.
AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani had stated that he intends to sign players at the end of the transfer window. Maybe Aquilani’s arrival is not yet the final signing for the Rossoneri.
