In order to make Liverpool a force to reckon with next season, manager Kenny Dalglish is very busy in the transfer market. He has already signed Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and looking for more signings to improve his squad. Liverpool have stepped up their chase of Aston Villa midfielder Stewart Downing who will provide them width in the wings. After Ryan Babel,Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic failed to impress for the reds they are looking for a pacey winger and Downing fits the bill perfectly. But Aston Villa is not willing to let go of Downing that easily after the loss of Ashley Young to Manchester United. Liverpool’s two bids are now rejected for Downing, as Aston Villa looking for £20m for the winger.
Aston Villa’s new manager Alex Mcleish stated,it will be a tough battle to keep Downing at Villa park next season as the player himself wants to leave. Liverpool will be bidding around £18m in the next week to persuade the midfielder to move to Anfield. Liverpool could use 22 year old striker David Ngog as a make weight in the deal. If that bid gets rejected then Downing might table a transfer request.
Liverpool are also chasing Blackpool captain Charlie Adam who is valued £9m. Meanwhile Jovanovic is being linked with Greek side Olympiakos but he might also return to Belgium. Liverpool are also willing to sell Alberto Aquilani and Joe Cole who is drawing interest from newly promoted Q.P.R.
Manager Kenny Dalglish stated that he needs a fit Steven Gerrard for his full campaign back in charge at Anfield. Liverpool would not risk Gerrard for their forthcoming pre-season friendlies in Asia. Gerrard has been struggling with groin injuries over the past two seasons and Dalglish didn’t want to take a risk of another injury. With so much money being spent, Liverpool fans will be hoping for a successful season under Dalglish.
