Manchester United began their pre-season tour of the United States with a thumping 4-1 victory over New England Revolution at the Gillete Arena in Boston. Goals from Michael Owen, Macheda and Park Ji Sung set up the victory as Ferguson looks to rebuild the squad that won him the English Premiership for a record twentieth time last season.
The first half was barren for both sides with only Berbatov failing to convert the only notable chance. Fabio, running across the byline, cut back for Berbatov who only had to put it past the goalkeeper. Instead his weak effort was well handled and United went goalless into the break. Berbatov, who future at Old Trafford looks bleak, was substituted at half time along with Wayne Rooney, who on the other hand has nothing to worry about his future after returning to form during the later part of the season.
The strikers were replaced by Owen, who recently signed a one year extension at United and Macheda, who spent an unsuccessful stint at Sampordia on loan. But the duo was right on the money here at Boston. Owen gave United the lead after neatly tucking the ball past the keeper from a tight angle before Macheda doubled the advantage three minutes later. New England were fortunate to pull one goal back after Benny Feilhaber’s freekick was unintentionally deflected into the goal by his own teammate. Seven minutes later, United were cruising after Macheda lashed a shot into the far corner after Rafael’s cross had eluded a bunch of players in the penalty area.
The introduction of Giggs was greeted with a huge cheer and the Welshman made it count as he combined with Obertan to feed Park who finished the classy move with a classier finish over the keeper to give United a whopping 4-1 victory.
Ferguson couldn’t have wished for a better start to his pre-season as his young guns outclassed the relatively weaker opposition. Ashley Young had a good debut in his No. 18 jersey while goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard didn’t do badly either.
United are off and running!
