Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull secured his sixth win of the season at Valencia. Even if he stays in Valencia for two months of beach holiday he would still lead the Formula One championship on a return for the Belgian Grand Prix. He stands as the runway champion of the season with 186 points in his kitty, he is 77 points ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button and team mate Mark Webber.
Fernando Alonso driving for Ferrari came second in his home country, and Mark Webber, third. Hamilton took fourth place after a poor start.
Vettel is fast making it into the record books and his hunger for perfection is underlined by the .fact that he had the fastest lap in Valencia while under no pressure whatsoever. It has been a long time since Michael Schumacher bored everyone into submission in 2004. Schumacher had won 13 of 18 races that year in his Ferrari, giving him a 72 per cent success rate. Sebastian Vettel who is also known as “Baby Schumi” is closing in on 75%!
He started from pole for the seventh time this year and never looked back after staying ahead of Webber. Hamilton had started cautiously from third, dropping behind the Ferraris of Alonso and Felipe Massa.
Hamilton pitted first on lap 13 and snatched back fourth spot three laps later when Massa came out behind the Briton following after his pit-stop.
Alonso was definitely quicker than second-placed Webber during his second stint but Alonso finally passed the Red Bull driver at Turn 12 on lap 21. He was unable to close the gap between himself and Vettel who continued to maintain a steady lead of three seconds.
The fastest three cars remained approximately within six seconds of each other while fifth-placed Massa began closing down Hamilton in fourth by around one second a lap.
Hamilton pitted on lap 25 and returned in seventh spot; Webber made his second stop of the race at 29th lap coming back in fourth. Alonso pitted on lap 30 as a traffic avoiding scheme but he returned to find himself behind Webber once again. Sebastian was lucky to have had no such problems, coming in a lap later and retaining top spot. Alonso fell behind Vettel by nine seconds after his Vettel’s third visit to the pit and the gap was maintained for the remaining 10 laps.
The win was important for Vettel after his recent disappointment of being passed on the final lap of the Canadian Grand Prix by Button due one of his rare mistakes.
