French great Patrick Viera announced his retirement from professional football. This ends the 35 old Frenchman’s long and illustrious footballing career. He was out of contract and was released by Man City after the end of last season. He will now take up the job of Football Development Executive at Manchester City and will help grooming the young and upcoming talents.
Viera has won almost everything throughout his career. He has won the World Cup and European Championship with the French national team. He enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Arsenal where he won 3 Premier League titles and 4 FA cups. He was a member of the 2003-04 Arsenal team which remained unbeaten throughout the season. They were termed “The Invincibles”. After spending 9 seasons with Arsenal Viera moved to Juventus, where he won the Serie A but because of match fixing scandal it was stripped away from then and was given to Inter Milan. Viera joined Inter after Juventus were relegated to Serie B. He enjoyed a great spell with Inter winning 4 successive league titles. After moving to Manchester City at January, 2010 Viera managed to win the FA cup with his last competitive appearance. Viera also captained the Arsenal side and the French national team. He had all the qualities of a good leader. He used to boss the midfield by some tough tackling, accurate passing and also had an eye for goal.
After taking up the new challenge Viera said:
“This role is a fantastic new challenge for me and I am very grateful to Manchester City for offering me this opportunity. I have a lot to learn about the non-playing areas of the business, but there are many very experienced people here for me to learn from, and I am confident that I can make a significant contribution to the club’s ongoing success.”
Brian Marwood, Manchester City’s chief football operations officer said – “Patrick is the ultimate professional and it is our very great privilege to introduce him as our new Football Development Executive.”
We hope that Viera’s experience and influence will prove handy in bringing up young and prospect football players. His jovial nature off the field will help the youngsters learn a lot from him.
