Finally football is back on the field and the fight out. The brawl between the settlements of $9 million along with several other pending issues brought out by the players that carried on for months has finally been resolved. The NFL lockout which lasted for about 18 weeks came to an end as the players and the owners reached an agreement of settling the issue.
32 team owners and the player’s union came to a collective bargain to a deal which will last till 10 years, until 2020. The main points were earlier discussed however there wasn’t any voting by the players’ side to declare the agreement as final. On Monday however the voting was done and all issues resolved as the new contract was established.
The CBA, or the collective bargaining agreement, states that the 10-year deal prevents the possibility of the agreement being questioned or opt-out. The old agreement had an opt-out clause which made the owners lock out the players resulting in the longest stoppage of work in league history.
Where the old deal had the revenue distributed with almost a 50-50 split, the new gives the owners 53 and the players 47.
Another main change was the expansion of the regular season with 16 games to now with 18 games.
Robert Kraft, the New England’s Patriots owner, said “I’d like, on behalf of both sides, to apologize to the fans: For the last five, six months we’ve been talking about the business of football—and not what goes on, on the field, and building the teams in each market, but the end result is we’ve been able to have an agreement that I think is going to allow this sport to flourish over the next decade.”
Kraft’s wife had just passed away last Wednesday due to cancer however Jeff Saturday, the Indianapolis Lineman, expressed sorrow on Myra Kraft and said it was brave of Robert Kraft to come out and help the association with such an important decision.
There were several points that players were pressing upon and the same went for the owners however the deal came to an end with a settlement from both the sides. On Tuesday, the draft picks and the rookie free agents will be signed and the sport facilities will resume then.
All the agreements and the votes will be made official as on August 4th as the players still have some issues to deal with but for now the agreements has been set and the games ready to begin!
