English Premier League side Liverpool are not showing any signs of ending their summer transfer activity, as transfers of players in and out from the Merseyside club is on with full speed, Director of Football Damien Comolli being the mastermind behind all the negotiations.
Despite already spending the entire money from the sale Fernando Torres on the signings of Andy Carroll and Uruguay’s Copa America winner Luiz Suarez in January, Liverpool have looked determined to add more depth to their squad with the recent signings of Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing, which have cost the Reds almost £50 million.
Now, manager Kenny Dalglish is keen to get a full-time left back and also a reserve striker, after he missed out on Arsenal’s Gael Clichy, who joined Manchester City, and Ipswich Town’s striker Connor Wickham, who completed an £8 million move to Sunderland as he preferred more first-team football.
Before moving on to buy the necessary players, Dalglish has stated that a few players will now have to be sold first to get some funds. Players like Alberto Aquilani, Christian Poulsen, David Ngog and Dani Pacheco are now surplus to requirements at Anfield and have been put up for sale. With Kenny’s desire to allow want-away players to leave the club means football fans will witness at least a couple of departures in the next few weeks, Paul Konchesky having already left to re-unite with Sven-Goran Errikson.
Among the ‘most-likely’ departures, Aquilani’s agent seems to have agreed upon a loan deal with Fiorentina for the Italian midfielder, who has failed to impress in his career at Liverpool after Rafa Benitez signed him in 2008-09 as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.
David Ngog looks to be on his way to Bolton Wanderers as manager Owen Coyle is looking for a good striker to support skipper Kevin Davies in front, after Johan Elmander departed for Galatasaray for a free transfer.
Dani Pacheco has made it clear to the club that he wants to move on if there are no first-team opportunities for him. Pacheco is a promising young forward from Spain, who had a successful loan-spell last season at Norwich City.
The case of ex-Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole, who could not stand up to the expectations last season, looks interesting. He was supposed to be the first player to be off-loaded due to his high wages. But, after the backing from Kenny and first-team coach Steve Clarke, it looks like Cole has been given a life-line, as he has vowed to fight for his place in the playing eleven.
And as replacements, or additions to be precise, there is news that Liverpool are now tracking German left-back Marcell Jansen as the transfer of Newcastle United’s Jose Enrique now looks difficult as the two clubs have failed to agree upon a transfer fee.
Besides Liverpool are looking at a couple of talented U-19 strikers from Mexico, who can be developed at the Academy while providing good cover for Suarez and Carroll, similar to last year’s signing of Javier Hernandez by arch-rivals Manchester United.
