According to a signed contract between Formula One giant, Bernie Ecclestone and the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin Formula One is scheduled to make its debut in 2014 with a state of the art racing circuit to be built in the Black Sea city of Sochi. It is believed that it will be the 100th anniversary of the last Russian Grand Prix which was last held in in the 1910s.
But even before construction has begun in full swing at the new circuit, Formula One fans got a treat at Moscow, the country’s capital where they enjoyed the spectacle of Formula One at a demonstration event. Last Sunday, McLaren’s Jenson Button, Ferrari test driver, Giancarlo Fisichella and Lotus test driver Karun Chandhok were expected to show off their driving skills in front of the Russian fans at the capital. It would have been a great event to relish and take in the beautiful sights and sounds of the roaring Formula One machinery.
At the Formula Sochi festival, around same time, Red Bull and Virgin racing teams were also expected to be unleashing the Formula One cars at the event for the huge crowd gathered here. This promotional event is being organized to get more people and fans attracted to the sport and build a platform when it arrives in 2014.
Formula One’s only Russian driver currently is Vitaly Petrov who drives for the Renault team. He was also expected to show off his driving skills in a Formula One car there. Virgin team has a unique bonding with Russia as they are partly owned by a Russian sports car maker called, Marussia Motors.
The event has been organized by the Krasnodar region’s motorsport federation with the support of Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister – and head of the Russian race’s organizing committee – Dmitry Kozak, and Alexander Tkachev, Governor of the Krasnodar region. It was a unique and exciting opportunity not only for the fans and people gathered there, but also for the teams as they were new to Russia and it was a great way to start their campaign leading to 2014.
