Clichy spoke for first time after joining Manchester City from Arsenal where he played for last eight years. Clichy is one of many players linked to move away from Arsenal along with Captain Febregas and star midfielder Nasri since transfer market opened. Although Nasri already said to play out his contract with Arsenal which will end in next year but doubts over gunners captain Cesc still remains with Barcelona not backing off in their long time pursue.
Clichy stated the desire to win trophy is the major reason behind his move and not denied that he would have easily signed a new contract with Arsenal but he sees Arsenal has a title challengers not the winners. Clichy statements will easily provoke anger from the Gunners fans who wanted loyalty from their best players to end their trophy hunt for the past six years.
Clichy said “After spending eight years with Arsenal it would have been easy to sign a new contract to stay there because they’re a fantastic club that will always be challenging for trophies. But it got to a point for me where I didn’t just want to challenge for the titles only to be disappointed in the final weeks of the season. I wanted to play for a club that would win them”.
Further he added “It was so frustrating at Arsenal. At times last year we played some fantastic football and looked as good as any team in the league. But there were also times when we had injuries to our best players and we couldn’t cope. If we lost Cesc Fabregas or Robin van Persie then the team really suffered”
Clichy highlighted this as major point for his move from Arsenal. Clichy clearly pointing out that lack of enough experienced players to rotate when their key players are injured let the team down. It is to be noted that at half way stage of the season, Arsenal is in contention for all five titles but injuries to their key players especially to their captain who made fewer than 50 appearances last season led to chaos for their team winning run after carling cup final loss.
Clichy signed off by saying “I wanted to play for a club that would win them. I joined City because I felt that this was a club ready to win important trophies over the next few years”.
With still no major signings yet again till now and doubts over the return of captain Cesc Fabregas leaves Arsene Wenger to ponder lot over the next week before their another friendly match on 23rd this month.
Arsenal will either break or make this season, it’s all depends on Wenger decisions. Yet another season believing in youth and another trophy less season could well end the Wenger regime at London.
