This year’s Copa America has been very evenly contested. The big teams haven’t dominated as they were expected to do. Chile another fancied team to put up a strong performance in this year’s Copa, was facing a young but talented Mexican side, who just won the Gold cup. This group C match was very exciting as two attacking and youthful teams faced each other. Eventually Chile emerged victorious with Arturo Vidal bagging the winner with a fine headed goal.
Mexico the regular special invited guests of the Copa America, elected to rest many of their stars after the Gold cup. Despite the inexperience, Mexicans got the break through on 40th minute through Nestor Araujo, who received a fine pass from Giovani Dos Santos and slotted the ball into the back of the net. The Chileans pressed with Isla and Sanchez bombing down the right wing and planting crosses in the box for Suazo, but they weren’t able to get the equalizing goal. But it looked only a matter of time for Chile to take one of their created chances as they had more possession of the ball. Mexico soaked up all the pressure and at the Del Bicentenario stadium the half time scoreline was 1-0 in favour of Mexico.
Chile filled with talented players like Alexis Sanchez, Mauricio Isla,Arturo Vidal,Matias Fernandez, Humberto Suazo, were not to be held back in the second half. They started the second half as they ended the 1st. More and more possession of football meant Mexico dropped even deeper to defend. Esteban Paredes came on to replace Jean Beausejour on the hour mark. This proved to be an inspired substitution by Claudio Borghi as the Colo Colo forward only needed 6 minutes on the pitch to grab the all-important equalizer. Chile pressed more in search for a winner and they were eventually rewarded on the 72th minute when Arturo Vidal headed a Matias Fernandez corner past Luis Michel in Mexico Goal. Chile didn’t stop attacking and looked to put the tie to bed. Mexico threw bodies forward but Chile captain Claudio Bravo at goal repelled all attacks and gave his side a deserved victory.
Chile takes on Uruguay next who drew with Peru, whereas Mexico needs a result against Peru to stay in the competition. Chile looking for their 1st Copa America title will be looking to carry the good form and momentum in the next game against the mighty Uruguayans. Both the games will take place on Friday local time.
