With news coming in of Michael Essien’s injury that might keep him out of football for up to six months, Chelsea have made an improved offer for Tottenham’s star Luka Modric after their 22 million bid was previously rejected. Spurs’ manager Redknapp had called the 22 million offer a joke and it is highly unlikely that Modric will be sold that the current 27 million pound will be accepted.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had already made it clear that the Croat international is not for sale but it is claimed that Tottenham are considering Lyon’s Miralem Pjanic as a possible replacement for Modric. Tottenham are preparing an 80,000 pound per week five year contract for Modric which would make him the highest paid player at White Hart Lane but the midfielder isn’t keen on staying and it would be a tough task for Redknapp and Levy to convince him to stay as he feels that a player of his caliber should be playing in the Champions League consistently.
Modric, along with Gareth Bale, played a stellar role in Tottenham’s journey to the Champions League quarterfinals last season but they finished fifth in the league, thus narrowly missing out on the Champions League spot. Chelsea, on the other hand finished runners up to Manchester United and with a new manager at the helm of affairs, are on the look to increase their midfield strength are also reportedly interested in signing Arsenal’s Samir Nasri and Inter’s Sneijder.
