Real Madrid midfield man and World Cup winning Xabi Alonso, who left Liverpool in the summer of 2009, to join Real Madrid has said that he could play for the Reds again, if circumstances arise. He added that he was happy with his Madrid career.
When asked if he would return to Liverpool, he replied “Why not? I have my red passion and if the circumstances arrived, then why not? Never say never.”
Recently, Alonso had stated in an interview with “liverpoolfc.tv” that the Reds’ ex-manager Rafa Benitez made it clear that he would be sold to bring in other players, and that he had no option but to move out. Though he left the club under difficult circumstances, with the fans criticising his sudden transfer request, he maintains that he still misses the club.
It is a generally accepted that Xabi Alonso was Benitez’s best signing (no, it definitely ain’t Torres), Liverpool’s slump coincided with his departure. The Spaniard spent 5 years at the Merseyside and won a Champions League and the FA Cup in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
He won many hearts at Anfield during his career, scoring the equalising goal in the Champions League final, blasting home the rebound from his spot kick, which was saved by Milan goalie Dida. He is also remembered for the two goals he scored from behind the half way line.
If ever this move comes through, it will be a happy story for both Alonso and the Anfield faithful.
