The match of the day was on Centre Court and it was a potential banana skin for the 5th seed Robin Soderling as he took on 2002 Champion Lleyton Hewitt. The Aussie got off the blocks very quickly and took the opening two sets playing some of his best tennis in recent memory. But the Swede came back from the brink to take the match in five sets sealing it 6-4 in the final set. In the biggest upset of this tournament so far French Open champion, Na Li fell to unseeded Sabine Lisicki 8-6 in the final set, while Roger Federer cruised through without a glitch. Novak Djokovic had a good workout but he too came through against South African Kevin Anderson.
Serena Williams also followed sister Venus’ path to the third round, dropping the first set but recovering to take the match, while del Potro, Ferrer and Schiavone had no problems in reaching the next round. The No 13 was unlucky on Thursday as 13th seeded Agneska Radwanska was a casualty in the women’s draw ,13th seed Viktor Troicki was upset in the men’s draw ,while the surprise in doubles’ draw came in the upset of Indo-Pak pair, Bopanna and Qureshi who lost to the Colombian pairing of Farah and Cabal, 21-19 in the final set.
Day 5 will see second and third round action as Maria Sharapova faces local favorite Laura Robson while Andy Roddick and Andy Murray should have an easy passage to the third round. Venus Williams will be in action and so will defending champion Rafael Nadal. One of the matches of the day features 25th seed Daniela Hantuchova taking on 4th seed Victoria Azarenka while 24th seed del Potro will battle 15th seed Gilles Simon. 12th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, 10th seed Mardy Fish and 6th seed Francesca Schiavone should all have confirmed their presence in the round of 16 before the night is over. Indian hopefuls will have Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Somdev dev Varman all in doubles action.
