Serena Williams is undoubtedly a great tennis player but she found it too tough to make a deep run at her first Grand Slam tournament after a series of health concerns. In the past year, she has been nursing two foot surgeries and blood clots in her lungs. After being immensely successful in the All England Club, Venus Williams too couldn’t show case her best after missing nearly five months of professional tennis due to a hip injury. The two sisters shared nine trophies of this Grand slam between themselves.
Defending champion Serena was defeated by Marion Bartoli as the Frenchwoman held her nerve 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win into the quarterfinals. Bartoli will now play quarterfinals with German Sabine Lisicki. Serena has won the title four times before, and this defeat was her worst defeat since 2005.Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova went past Venus Williams for a second straight year at the event. The score line too was duplicated as is previous history, 6-2, 6-3.
After the match Pironkova has been quoted as saying “I love the grass, I feel so relaxed and the atmosphere makes me feel comfortable. I played and pushed her as far as I could. She(Venus) got shaky and made errors. But that’s tennis. It was not so difficult to close it out. I just tried to focus and think of the next point.”
Bartoli was full of praises for Serena .She is quoted speaking to the press after the match “It is one of my best wins. Beating Serena is almost like a dream come true. She is probably one of the greatest champions. To come back after having three match points (saved by Williams in the 12th game of the second set) and to still bounce back is huge. I was playing great and had a lot of occasions. It was not easy to hang on mentally, but I did and I’m happy. Serena is imposing, a huge opponent. If you look too much at her you feel pressure. I was trying to stay in my own bubble and focus on my own game.”
It was definitely not a good day for both of them as both the sisters crashed out on the same day.
