Andre Villas-Boas, dubbed the new Mourinho, has been appointed as the Chelsea FC manager after resigning from Porto FC on a 3-year deal (if the manager history at Chelsea under Abramovich is anything to go by, it would be quite a surprise if he sees the deal through).
The 33 year-old comes in as replacement for the sacked Carlo Ancelotti. Villas-Boas had worked at Chelsea earlier as the assistant of Jose “The Special One” Mourinho. Though Villas-Boas had a price tag of €15 million, it did not dissuade Chelsea from appointing him.
Villas-Boas is younger than some of Chelsea’s first squad members, and it will be interesting to see if he can replicate his success at Porto even at the London club.
“Andre was the outstanding candidate for the job. He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time,” a statement on the Chelsea website reads. “His ambition, drive and determination match that of Chelsea and we are confident Andre’s leadership of the team will result in greater successes in major domestic and European competitions.”
“Andre will bring his coaching experience back to a club he is already very familiar with, having previously worked here for three years. He has always been highly regarded at Chelsea and everyone here looks forward to welcoming him back and working with him.”
With their star manager now gone, Porto will have to be careful to ensure that none of their star players follow suit. Last season’s heroes Radamel Falcao and Hulk have both been linked with a move away from Porto and a might follow their coach’s footsteps.
