Ross Taylor would have been appointed as the captain of the New Zealand cricket team but there is more than just the responsibility as the leader for Ross. He has been handed over the ultimatum to lift the standard of New Zealand cricket and scale peaks on the verge of being triumphant.
John Buchanan is a master tactician and now as the director holds the key position as equivalent to the coach and captain to produce results. He was instrumental in shaping the invincibles Australian team to a formidable unit. If he could succeed even half of that, New Zealand will be on the verge of knocking the top spot. The best decision of appointing a single captain for all formats of the game has to be appreciated more than even appointing Ross Taylor because that gives anyone the flexibility and comfort of understanding the team better than anyone and that lays the first stepping stone towards success path. John Wright is a sharp thinker and can be very useful to pull out rare talents from nowhere. His interim as Indian coach had produced some great budding youngsters, out of whom some flourished while others were dumped by Chappell. One important aspect that has to be focused by the board is to collaborate as a unit and clear all misunderstandings. Once a strong bonding is encompassed, it creates a positive energy around the team and that will bring out success automatically.
Ross Taylor was chosen ahead of Brendon McCullum and that is a good move because Brendon has been at the receiving end for most of his time as a captain. His record with KKR as the skipper was evident and John Buchanan who witnessed this closely would have played a major role in the selection. But that does not take away any credit from the batting skills of both the players. Ross and Brendon have strong hitting abilities and can clear the park quite easily. But now they must adjust and mold their batting abilities to match winning knocks and as saviors during critical situations. They will have to steady the scoring rate and play a supporting role at one end and end up as finishers. If either one of them click like that then even a huge 300+ chase is made look easy and pocketed. Ross Taylor’s aggressive intent is clearly a sign of indication and the small country definitely needs something to cheer about. They have done it in the past but can they do it again and replenish their resources is the talking point.
