The legendary left handed opener of Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya has finally announced his retirement from all forms of International cricket after the first ODI against England. He had already retired from the Test format four years ago but continued to play the shorter versions of the game.
Sanath Teran Jayasuriya is one of the highly respected, if not the most respected Sri Lankan cricketer and one of the most feared batsmen, for any opposition. Once he gets going, it would seem impossible to stop him score runs of almost any kind of bowling attack. He has developed a fear in the mind of the bowlers with his all-out aggressive batting. The cut-shot and hook are some of his trade mark shots. He is rather considered as an all-rounder in the team, due to his fairly successful bowling career, with his slow left arm spin, helping Sri Lanka, many a times,to get wickets at crucial time in the game.
Jayasuriya played a part in the Sri Lankan team that lifted the World Cup in 1996. He is the highest run scorer in ODI in Sri Lanka’s cricketing history. In his 444 ODI matches, he has scored over 13,000 runs and taken more than 300 wickets. He is also a part of the highly successful Mumbai Indian IPL team.
With age and being the senior most player in the team, he never feared giving his 100% on the field, many a times giving a hard chase after the ball, or even diving to stop it. His passion for playing cricket and his on-field commitment is highly commendable. It will not only be difficult for Sri Lankan cricket but also for any Sanath Jayasuriya fan, to bid farewell to such a legend of the game. It was a sheer moment of excitement when Sanath used to bating the middle. It would be a pity to not see him in action any more.
