Rory McIlroy won his first major golf title in the 111th US Open on Sunday as he flipped the last round into a victory lap on his way to an eight-stroke triumph. He became the youngest US Open winner in 88 years.
McIlroy now has become the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods at the 1997 Masters and the youngest US Open winner since Bobby Jones in 1923.
McIlroy, the 22-year-old Northern Ireland prodigy shot a two-under par 69 to finish 72 holes at Congressional Country Club on 16-under par 268, the lowest winning total in US Open history.
An ecstatic McIlroy said “The whole week has been incredible. I couldn’t ask for much more. I’m just happy to be holding this trophy.”
When asked about Woods back in 1997 he replies “Do I know how good Tiger was in 2000? I was going out there and trying to emulate him in some way. “I was great for four days and I couldn’t be happier about it.”
Tiger Woods has not had a single win in twenty months after the infamous sex scandal. And he missed the U.S. Open due a left knee injury.
Jason Day of Australia ended up as runners up with distant 276. South Korean Yang Yong-Eun, England’s Lee Westwood and Americans Robert Garrigus and Kevin Chappell all shared third on 278.
His earlier scores were 65, 66 and 68 he became only the third player in Open history to complete four rounds in the 60s, a feat matching Lee Janzen and Lee Trevino.
His win also marked the fifth Major in a row without an American winner, the longest Major scarcity in the country’s history. McIlroy followed compatriot Graeme McDowell in winning the title and lifting the cup.
McIlroy further says, “Augusta was a very valuable experience for me.” “I learned a few things about myself and my game and I put them into practice. I knew what I had to do to win.”
He celebrated the win with his father Gerry. “Happy Father’s Day dad,” McIlroy said. “This is for you.”
