Michael Owen has agreed to sign a one year extension contract with the Red Devils, which means the striker will complete a third season as a first team player for Manchester United.

There was growing speculation about Owen’s future at the Old Trafford at the end of 2010-2011 season that the striker would be leaving this summer after his two year stay at Old Trafford. The striker struggled to make appearances in the first 11 due to fitness worries which further resulted in lack of form. But the 31-year-old has repeatedly stated that he wants to stay with the 19th times Premier League Champions.

The Red Devils granted Owen his wish by signing a further one year contract and the English International is indeed delighted to have earned a new deal with United.

Owen stated “I’m delighted to have agreed a one-year extension to my contract.”

“To play alongside so many great players, under an exceptional manager, and in front of so many incredibly passionate supporters, is a real inspiration. I can’t wait for next season to start.”

Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson too stated his happiness at agreeing the deal which will keep Owen at Old Trafford for another season. Owen failed to feature in most of matches in the season due to fitness and when he recovered, he had the likes of in-form young Mexican, Hernandez receiving the nod ahead of Owen on most of the occasions. However, Ferguson has promised that the striker will be given more opportunities to showcase his great abilities and skills.

Ferguson said “Michael has proved to be a top footballer.”It’s unfortunate Michael didn’t get more opportunities but the form of Chicharito put everyone in the shade and his partnership with Rooney proved invaluable.

“I am delighted Michael is staying for a further year and we will look to give him more opportunities in the new season.”

It would be a treat for the fans as they will be able to see the striker stay and perform at Old Trafford. Owen has always been a special player for the Red Devils and whenever he has come on to play, on most occasions he has proved his worth and scored goals regularly. Owen was brought as a late substitute in their last game which United played against Blackpool where Owen managed to score a beautiful goal which his usual smooth finish, helping United to win 4-1. Everyone would be waiting to see more of Michael Owen.
