Indian Tennis fans had to absorb a shock when veterans Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi crashed from the Wimbledon Men’s double event. They had a strong start but had to make a shocked exit from Wimbledon Championships as they lost the second round 6-2 3-6 7-6 (1) 4-6 to French-Czech pair Arnaud Clement and Lukas Dlouhy.
The duo, fondly known as the ‘Indian Express’ pair dominated the opening set. They lost the momentum in the course of the game which allowed their unseeded rivals to make a strong comeback. Even in the French Open tournament, they had to exit from the tournament in the early stage and both of them had failed to make a significant mark.
Clement and Dlouhy together broke the Indian two times, once in the third and once in the ninth game in the second set to equalize the scores. The Indians fought well in the third set to draw the score to a tie, but eventually lost the encounter to the opponents. The fourth set saw the Indians losing their nerves and dropping the serve in the first game itself. Then they started losing the momentum badly, and the small lead that the opponent pair had made was enough to drive them deeper into the attack. They gained momentum and closed out the difference very quickly.
Leander Paes was previously defeated a day before by Lukas Doluhy, who was his previous doubles partner!
This defeat means that Paes and Bhupathi will now have to try winning their first Grand Slam together at US Open which is the last tennis major of the season.
Rohan Bopanna and his doubles partner from Pakistan Asiam Ul haq Qureshi also crashed out of the tournament earlier. After this shocking defeat, Somdev Devvarman the only hope in Indian in the men’s doubles draw. He along with Japanese partner Kei Nishikori, have already moved to the second round.
