Chelsea’s fans can breathe safely for now. A summer of uncertainty beckons with departures seeming to be the norm at the Bridge currently with players leaving by the truckload. Frank Arnesen has succeeded in enticing some of Chelsea’s brightest talents to Hamburg. Manager-less Chelsea look to be in danger of losing direction and fans seem to be hoping for the end of the European qualifiers which should bring Guus Hiddink back in charge of Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Michael Essien has put rest any fears of him leaving Chelsea. Reports both in his homeland Ghana and Italy were seem to be suggesting that a move to Inter Milan was in the works. Inter have identified certain areas that need strengthening and the centre midfield seems to be one of them. In order to challenge their rivals AC Milan for the title next year, Inter shall have to buy someone to serve as a foil to Sneijder’s attacking instincts.
However Essien has denied wanting to be anywhere but the Bridge next August. In an interview to Skysports, he said ‘I am looking forward to next season; I want to win back the title and bring the Champions League to Chelsea.’ He also said that he did not have any idea why rumours of him wanting to leave Chelsea were doing the rounds.
Chelsea are looking to invest heavily this summer before the UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Regulations come into play. An ageing squad needs to be replenished with some major stars set to exit the club. The fans that are hopeful that Roman Abramovich will be back to the heydays of his spending spree may be disappointed. But the feeling around the club is that it needs to bring about some rapid changes in order to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive league. The first step to regain stability would be the appointment of a new manager. But in the meantime, confirmation that stars like Essien do not wish to leave the club will be a relief to all.
