Manchester United top goal scorer for the 2010-2011 season, Dimitar Berbatov, could make a sensational return to his former club Tottenham.
The Bulgarian looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer following his Champions League Final snub at Wembley against Barcelona where United were beaten 1-3 by the Spanish Giants. The striker is keen on making £10 million return to his former club, Tottenham.
Berbatov moved from Spurs to United in 2008 on the last day of the summer transfer window, costing the club £30.75 million and signing a four-year contract. However, the striker revealed that he would be interested in a return to White Hart Lane.
The Bulgarian was a big hero for the fans in North London and was highly rated as a player during his Spurs days. He scored 46 goals in all competitions in two seasons at the White Hart Lane following his £10.9 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006. However, he left his fans fuming following his transfer to Old Trafford.
According to sources, Tottenham have discussed the possibility of getting back the services of the Bulgarian but are unsure about posting a bid due to the striker’s unsettling nature in the dressing room during his Spurs days.
However, the Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy is wary of the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson has shown keen interest in Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric. A bid for Berbatov would surely spark up the decision to swap player. However, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, has made it very clear that Modric will not be moving out of White Hart Lane, despite the Croatian stating that he is open to a move to a club in Champions League.
A close source to Berbatov stated “Dimitar will take some time to think about his future but the only clubs in England he would consider are those in the Champions League – or Tottenham.
“Right now, he does not want to play for United – and they don’t seem to want him either.”
Berbatov four year deal with the Red Devils will come to an end next June and the striker has refused to sign a one-year rolling deal worth £120,000-a-week.
Berbatov finished as the Premier League joint top scorer with 21 goals, the other one being City’s Carlos Tevez. But the 30-year old is unhappy being the 2nd choice striker as Hernandez is given the nod ahead of him for most of the matches.
Although the striker is aged 30, yet he is not short of offers from big clubs. Earlier he was also linked to the German giants Bayern Munich. Italian side Juventus also wanted to grab the Bulgarian.
The striker is also been linked to Newcastle with a £7.5m move to St. James’ Park but is understood that the striker has no interest in moving out to Newcastle despite being grown up as a Newcastle fan.
The link-ups, rumours will now start to flourish as the transfer window starts tomorrow and who knows where the Bulgarian turns up. It would be a very happy moment for the North London fans if the 30-year old returns back to his former club where he spent his 2 wonderful years. Ferguson will look for a young replacement for the striker, if Berbatov is to leave this summer.
