Sir Alex Ferguson completed his second signing of the season as Ashley Young became the newest entrant at Old Trafford. Young signed a 15 million pound deal which will keep him at Old Trafford for five years. With Ferguson already having signed Blackburn’s Phil Jones and with the deal almost complete for Atletico Madrid’s goalkeeper David de Gea, United have committed themselves to 50 million pounds worth of signing this summer.
Young said he was delighted to sign for United. He also praised the Villa fans and supporters calling them fantastic and said this was an offer he couldn’t turn down. “You get a buzz inside. You get that great feeling that one of the greatest managers in the world wants to sign you and one of the greatest clubs in the world wants to buy you” is how Young described his feelings on knowing that Ferguson was interested in signing him. Young said that he aimed to be part of history by helping United win their 20th league title.
Young’s arrival raises questions about Nani’s future in the side. Nani was an integral part of United’s successful campaign last season with Valencia missing a major part of the season due to injury. Nani won United’s player of the year and scored 9 goals but found himself on the bench more often than not when Valencia returned from injury. Ferguson prefers playing Park in the big games and this saw Nani missing out on a starting spot in the Champions League final against Barcelona sparking rumours about Nani’s departure from the Theatre of Dreams.
Whatever happens, Ferguson will not be short of wide players in the upcoming season with Nani, Valencia, Giggs, Park and now Young at his disposal. A strike force consisting of Rooney, Berbatov and Hernandez and with Ferdinand, Vidic and a new goalkeeper at the backline, United once again look like the runaway favourites for adding another league title to their memorabilia.
