It does seem to be a familiar sight this transfer season with regards to Arsenal. They finished the season having lost their steam midway and fans looked at their team and wondered what the addition of a couple of good players would do to the team. However Arsenal again looks as the team that shall see more ‘high profile’ exits than entries.
Arsenal has been considered a young team with great potential for ages now. However they also have developed the image of a ‘selling club’. Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas have all voiced their discontent and could be on their way out of the club. Samir Nasri is wanted by Manchester United who are looking to splash the cash this summer in order to rebuild their team. His contract runs until 2012 and all negotiations regarding an extension seem to have broken down. Wenger has already come out and said that he would not be selling any of his players to domestic rivals Manchester United. However Arsenal seems to have gotten into a tough spot here. They could deny Nasri the transfer and risk losing him for nothing next year.
Gael Clichy is coveted by Liverpool as an answer to their troublesome left back position. Again the loss of a firmly established player to domestic rivals will be felt. However Arsenal have Kieran Gibbs as an able replacement and might be willing to cash in on Clichy. However some reports suggest that Arsenal might make a move for Newcastle’s unsettled Jose Enrique.
The story for Fabregas is vastly different. Since his rise at Arsenal we have been constantly been reminded of his Barca DNA by Xavi and Pique. Barcelona almost seems to believe that this would lower the asking price below the 40 million mark. Arsenal should drive the price up and sell Fabregas lest his stock dips further. They would be better off by getting Nasri to sign an extension with a significant increase in his wages. They could also use the money they get by Fabregas’ transfer to buy two good midfielders especially a left sided midfielder.
