Sebastian Vettel cruised to his sixth victory in eight races as he pulled away his advantage to 77 points at top of the F1 World Championship. Vettel drove an absolutely impeccable race as he brought home his Red Bull 10.8 seconds ahead of hometown hero Fernando Alonso for a second consecutive victory at the circuit before Webber made sure that Red Bull Racing occupied two places on the podium. Lewis Hamilton, runner up in the last three races, finished next – three quarters of a minute behind Vettel.
The opening part of the race saw Vettel disappear ahead of the grid while Hamilton, starting cautiously from third, was overtaken by the Ferraris of Massa and Alonso. It didn’t take long for Alonso to go past his teammate and go in the pursuit of Webber. He used his DRS to go past the Red Bull on Lap 21 but Webber reclaimed his second position as the cars went into their second round of pit-stops. Hamilton set up a few flying laps but fell behind as he was told to look after his tyres. Alonso had his revenge as he went past Webber during the third round of pit-stops. All this while Vettel was cruising to his sixth victory of the season and he was absolutely flawless unlike his error a fortnight ago at Canada where he allowed Button to take home the chequered flag. Alonso crossed the chequered flag second followed by Webber who had developed a gearbox problem during the end of the race. Massa completed the top 5 whereas Button who had predicted a close race finished sixth. Rosberg, Alguersari, Sutil and Heidfeld completed the other point scoring positions.
Vettel’s victory moved him to 186 points and so far ahead of second placed Button that he could decide to take a break for the next three races and would still be leading the Championship. Webber is tied with Button on 109 points while Hamilton and Alonso have 97 and 87 points respectively. Red Bull leads the constructor’s Championship with 295 points. McLaren are 89 points behind and would be hoping for Hamilton and Button to close the gap in their home Grand Prix at Silverstone in two weeks time.
