It seems like the long wait to fill the vacant managerial position at Chelsea is finally coming to an end. After the departure of Carlo Anchelotti from the Bridge there were speculations involving a number of high profile coaches with Guss Hiddink being the front runner. But that scenario has changed drastically and Chelsea have turned their attentions to the Europa League winning Coach Andre Villas-Boas be the successor of Anchelotti.
Villas-Boas began his managerial career in October 2009 with Academica. He moved to Porto in June 2010. Under his management Porto not only won the domestic double but also won the Europa league by beating local rivals Braga. Porto didn’t lose a single game in the whole league campaign. He is also the youngest manager to win an European title. He is also the youngest international team manager. After such a successful stint with Porto, Villas-Boas caught the eye of the Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. He paid a staggering 13.3 million pounds to the Portuguese club in compensation of the termination of Villas-Boas contract. At the age of 33, Villas-Boas will become the youngest current manager of the Premier League. Villas-Boas was associated with Chelsea before in 2004, and then he was one of the scouts of Jose Muorinho. With Villas-Boas leaving Porto many players of the club are also expected to follow his footsteps and join Chelsea. With Falcao and Hulk being tipped as the main targets, it will be interesting to see how he manages to cope with the pressure of delivering trophies at Stamford Bridge. He will also have to handle the egos of senior players, so his approach will be under scrutiny. Time will tell the outcome but Villas-Boas is definitely one exciting talent, he will be fearless and will bring new ideas to Chelsea.
The expectations on Villas-Boas will be high and the Chelsea fans would want him to replicate the success that their former Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho had with them. It is a kind of a gamble to pay such huge amount of money on a coach who has very little experience. But we hope at the end of the day he doesn’t become a managerial casualty at Stamford Bridge if he fails to bring any trophies.
