Chelsea are in the market for a lot of things this summer. Not only do they need players in order to mount a realistic challenge in an increasingly close league, they need a manager, sporting director and a chief scout! Wholesale changes shall be given an entirely new name this summer by Chelsea.
Goalkeeping
This is one area that Chelsea should not be too concerned. Petr Cech has recaptured the form that saw him become the best goal-keeper in the league. An able understudy exists in the form of Ross Turnbull so do not expect any new goalkeepers making the trip to the Bridge.
Defence
With the addition of David Luiz is the last transfer window, the defence has been further strengthened. Ashley Cole is still the best left back in the country and the trio of Terry, Alex and Luiz should be able to manage the center-back positions. A cover is needed for Ivanovic at right back and probably Bosingwa will be shipped to Italy where there is still interest for the tactically ineptitude defender. Chelsea have been linked with Van der Wiel and there will be some action on these lines. Also Frank Arnesen wants to take Mancienne and Bruma to Hamburg.
In: Van der Wiel (Ajax, £9m)
Out: Jeffrey Bruma (Hamburg, loan), Michael Mancienne (Hamburg, £3m), Jose Bosingwa
Midfield
This transfer window should see the arrival of at least one right side mid-field player. Yossi Benayoun and Ramires cannot be entrusted with doing the job for the whole season. Also I would rather not have three midfield enforcers in my team so probably it is time for Essien to be sold. The simple reason why Essien should be sold over Mikel and Ramires is that he has been the worst of the lot this season. Also the other two are young and hence have age on their side. Expect Zhirkov to be shipped back ‘To Russia: with love.’
A lot has been made of the alleged link-up of Kaka with Ancelotti again. With Mourinho persisting by using di Maria over Kaka it seemed inevitable that Kaka would move to Chelsea. However with the departure of Ancelotti the rumblings seem to have subsided. They have been replaced with talks about moving in for Luka Modric a player who has endeared himself to everyone with his consistent performances for Tottenham. Another player linked heavily with Chelsea is the Argentine Javier Pastore. One out of these three should be in the Blue jersey come August.
In: Kaka (Real Madrid, £25m), Luka Modric (Tottenham, £30m)
Out: Yuri Zhirkov (CSKA, £10m-£13m), Michael Essien
Attack
One of the sore points of this year’s campaign was Chelsea’s inability to attack. A lot of people have been amazed that Chelsea are courting Neymar having just paid a whopping price for Fernando Torres. However this time we might see a total overhaul with the attack. The new manager will be pressured to build a team around Torres and that automatically excludes Drogba. With Real Madrid and Mourinho courting the forward, he could be used in a player swap deal to get Kaka. If Neymar does arrive and Sturridge is finally given a chance to play more, Drogba shall not be the only forward leaving the Bridge. He might be followed by either Malouda or Anelka. Both players have had an up and down season and might be sold in order to re-coup some of the transfer funds.
In: Neymar (Santos, £23m), Daniel Sturridge (back from loan), Gael Kukuta (back from loan)
Out: Drogba(Real Madrid, £30m), Florent Malouda/Nicholas Anelka
