French Open 2011 – has started off in a much predicted fashion as the winners have an easy first round against some of the uncapped players. The shocking casualty of the first round was the last year’s semi – finalist Tomas Berdych who crashed out the grand slam.
Sixth seed Berdych, who beat Andy Murray in the fourth round last year before losing to Robin Soderling, did not appear in any trouble when he took the first two sets against Frenchman Stephane Robert. But the tide turned in the third set and, after leveling proceedings, Robert broke in the 15th game of the decider to a huge roar from the partisan crowd before serving out a stunning 3-6 3-6 6-2 6-2 9-7 victory. Berdych seemed to have answered his critics with his form last year, when he also reached the Wimbledon final, but questions will again be asked about the Czech’s mental strength after losing in such circumstances to a player ranked 140.
Djokovic breezed past his opponent Thiemo in 92 minutes and extended his unbeaten consecutive run of victories to 40 (just 2 away from creating a record held by McEnroe). He is all set to become the new champ for the season and he is sure to create some headaches for Nadal and Federer.
Sania Mirza also started her campaign at the Garros impressively beating Kristiana in straight sets and is all set to improve her Grand slam record since 2009. She feels French Open to be the toughest event as it is being played on the clay surface but was never in trouble when she eased her way past in 1hr and 15 minutes. She would ideally like to improve her record at the Grand Slam as still her appearance at the 4th round of US open in 2005 is still the best till date.
As the days go by, we are definitely in for a visual treat at the Garros and are in to see records tumble as Djokovic has hit the purple patch in his career. He seems to have unscripted the code for success and is relishing it day by day. We shall see the real match up when the King of Clay takes on the King of the moment. There can be no predictions made on that match as both are class players and both are definitely in form! Looking ahead to witness that match as an ardent tennis lover!
