As expected, Manchester United secured the point that it needed to bring home its 19th league title to Old Trafford. At the bottom, West Ham blew a two goal lead and collapsed to a defeat that sent them to the Championship, with one game remaining. As we approach the last ninety minutes of what has been a topsy turvy season, here’s what at stake for teams on Sunday.
All matches on the final day will kick off simultaneously; hence the teams on the pitch will not be aware of what is happening at other stadium, unless news filters through. Chelsea looks to have sealed the runners up spot, as a combination of its loss and a Man City win can only deny them 2nd place. Even then, City will have to overcome a 12 goal deficit, which is highly unlikely. They will however look to cement 3rd place, and with it automatic qualification into the Champions League. They are a point ahead of Arsenal, who travels to Fulham, while they head to Bolton. Victory for City will mean further problems for Arsenal, who could have Fabregas represent them for the last time.
Tottenham beat Liverpool last week, and have all but secured fifth spot and a Europa League spot. They are now a point ahead of Liverpool, but both have tricky fixtures this weekend. Spurs host a Birmingham side fighting for their Premier League lives while Liverpool are away to Villa Park.
All the attention will now be at the bottom of the table, where two of any five teams will join West Ham at the Championship next season.
Wigan starts the day at second bottom and is on 39 points. They seem to be clawing away at points and last weekend’s last gasp win gives them some momentum. They are up against a Stoke side who will be tired after their FA Cup loss, but have not lost at the Britannia Stadium. Defeat will not mean certain relegation, but a victory will not guarantee safety either.
Blackpool now travels to newly crowned Premier League champions Manchester United in search of three points. They face the same scenario as Wigan, as defeat or victory will not guarantee anything. But a fixture which from which they can get something as United will rest players for the Champions League final.
The other team on 39 points are Birmingham City, as they prepare to visit Tottenham. This is a tough fixture as Spurs will look to seal fifth place. The equation for Birmingham is simple, match or better Blackpool and Wigan’s results as their future in not in their hands.
Wolves will host Blackburn with both teams on 40 points. Victory for either will be enough to keep them up, while a defeat will not mean certain relegation. A draw could mean both teams are safe while it could also lead to both teams getting relegated.
This season’s relegation battle could be decided on goal difference or even goals scored. It has certainly been an up and down season at the bottom of the league and come the final whistle on Sunday only three out of five managers will be smiling.
