Novak Djokovic is on a formidable run of his professional tennis career as he clinched the ATP Miami Masters thereby extending his winning streak to 24 this year. The Serbian vanquished the top seed Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 in a nail-biting final on Sunday.
The Miami Masters final was an absolute crowd-puller as the stage geared up to a whopping game that lasted for more than 3 hours to ease out a winner. The first set had mixed pieces of lucks for both the players as they had firm grip on their first service. Nadal stressed on his aggression to clinch Djokovic’s service twice but fell immediately losing his two services. But the drama in opening set extended for an hour as Nadal drew first blood to clinch the set 6-4. Djokovic proved his standards by setting the court on fire with pushing the top seed’s service to deuce twice and edged 5-1. But Nadal’s resistance made the scorecard look much more decent ending 6-3 and surprised the crowd for a thrilling final frontier. Both the players were cautious and learned from their mistakes not to give their service and that only moved them to the tie-breaker to decide their fortune. A rare double fault making it his sixth of the match from Nadal made it 3-2 advantage for Djokovic and he grabbed it with both hands to take an unassailable 4 point difference lead and winning the tie-breaker 6-2 and the title.
The Serbian said that it was his best 4 months of his career and promises to deliver more. His juggernaut had started with exhibition Hopman Cup and signed off Australia with his second grand slam and his second Australian Open title beating Andy Murray. This was a milestone in his career as he toppled Roger Federer to become the #2 seed. His confidence was boosted as he entered the Dubai Tennis Championship as two time defending champion. He hammered Federer for the second time in the year in the finals 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the title and winning a hat-trick of titles. His hat-trick reigned supreme as he overshadowed Federer again in Indian Wells semi-finals and marched to beat the top seed Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to pocket the title.
Djokovic has always been unlucky in recent years picking up injuries in the course of a tournament or stressed after a 5 setter match back to back. But he has overcome that hurdle of his fitness and looks strong and confident. It will time to see a new face being branded as top seed at the end of the year if Djokovic continues to dominate his reign of excellence beyond par.
