Manchester United continued its dominance in the Premier League table by a ten point lead from the Gunners after defeating Fulham 2-0 yesterday in Old Trafford. Winger Nani’s twin assists helped Berbatov and Valencia to net the goal even before the first half.
Both Berbatov and Valencia had been off the line-up for some time picking up injuries. Even though their absence did not hurt much their presence proved to be vital. With a roaring attendance of 75,339 in Old Trafford you can’t ask for more home support. In the tenth minute came the beautiful skill play from Nani as he got past two defenders after receiving a back pass from Berbatov and finally sent it back to Berbatov who clinched his 22nd goal of the season. Though Berbatov’s feet were standing in the midst of a controversial offside he was given the benefit of doubt. Ten minutes later a beautiful counterattack was on display by the Red devils. Patrick Evra laid a cross to winger Nani who urged Fulham goalkeeper Schwarzer to leave his net open and Nani crossed and left the rest for Valencia to finish and held a decisive lead. Fulham did have their chances but luck was not theirs. Bobby Zamora penetrated into the United’s defense but the ball had deflected into his path inside the United penalty area. There was no catching up after that as it was a happy ending for the United fans even though they missed the likes of Wayne Rooney who is under a two-match suspension. They now have 69 points from 32 games leading Arsenal by 10 who are 59 from 30 matches. It will be a close contest between Chelsea and Man City as the former leads with 2 points with both of them having played 31 games.
On the other results, Tottenham returned to winning ways after edging past Stoke City 3-2. West Bromwich came from behind to clinch a stunning victory 3-2 over Sunderland. Chelsea were made to sweat by Wigan Athletic even though they managed to pull off a win with a goal from Florent Malouda in the 66th minute. Meanwhile, Bolton Wanderers rode smoothly with a 3-0 win over West Ham United. But the match of the day turned out to be between the relegation rivals Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City as the hard fought match ended in a draw which turned to be the fair result.
