Alex Ferguson is keen to find a suitable replacement for the current United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. United will see the veteran goalkeeper hang up his gloves, as he is set to retire at the end of this season.
Manchester United has always faced the dilemma of finding a suitable No.1 for their side. It has now become a priority for Ferguson, as United has always struggled to fill this department. After United parted ways with the legendary Peter Schmeichel in 1999, it took them six long years to fill the position. United had the services of the famous Frenchmen, Barthez, but only for a short duration.
However, in 2005, United finally ended their search for a suitable No. 1, when they signed Van der Sar from Fulham. Since then, Edwin has been outstanding throughout his career at Old Trafford. He has been consistent with his performance and has been consistent with this fitness, causing no worry for the club and the fans.
The veteran wants to end his career on a high, by winning the League Cup and Champions League. “I have had a reasonable career so far. Let’s hope I can finish it off nicely,” said the 40 year old.
Sir Alex Ferguson however is hoping that the Club will not face the similar situation of struggling with the replacement for a suitable No. 1. United will try to recover from the situation and fill the position as soon as possible.
Ferguson stated “I hope it’s not impossible because we had a similar situation with Peter Schmeichel when he left and I had the opportunity to sign Edwin then but the situation conspired against us.”
“We made the wrong decision, but since we have had him, he has been unbelievable.”
Ferguson was all praise for the veteran goalkeeper. Ferguson added that “Edwin is one of the best”, following their 1-0 win against Everton on Saturday.
The Club will see the departure of the Dutch, but will surely remain in the hearts of millions of fans all across the globe. He was wonderful for the Club, Country and the fans. He will be greatly missed at Old Trafford and irrespective of his replacement; he will be one of the best forever. The Red Devils can bid him the best farewell by winning the League and Champions League title.
