It has been a glorious week of uncertainties in English football as underdogs Birmingham City clinched the League Cup from the grasp of the vastly superior Arsenal squad displaying total dominance over their opponents. And West Ham further added zing to the above conclusion by stunning high flying Liverpool at Upton Park. However there were no worrying signs for Manchester United as they crushed a hapless Wigan side 4-0 at DW stadium.
Wigan were made to pay for some lackluster defending as Javier Hernandes struck twice to give a crushing blow to the Latics hope of survival . A third from Wayne Rooney and a fourth from Fabio ensured a complete rout and a morale boosting performance ahead of an important clash at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea this Tuesday. Elsewhere at Villa Park, it seems Gerrard Houllier’s magic wand is finally working as an inspired performance from the Villan’s ensured that they remain safe away from the drop zone and keep inching towards a top 10 finish which a club of their stature always craves for. Two goals from Ahsley Young and some inspired footballing magic from winger Stewart Downing gave them a 4-1 win to heap further pressure on Steve Kean’s Blackburn side.
Bolton struggled but held Newcastle to a 1-1 draw at St James Park. Kevin Nolan struck the opener for the Magpies when Tiote passed the ball to an unmarked Nolan who made no mistake. How hot on form, Daniel Sturridge struck his 4th goal for Bolton in consecutive matches to set a new record. Chelsea would definitely be ruing their misfortune as they are finding it difficult to find the back of the net. Jermaine Beckford struck twice to hand in a 2-0 win for Everton at Goodison Park, and gave them a boost in their bottom table fight.
However the result of the week came from Upton Park as bottom placed West Ham stunned Liverpool 3-1 to move away from the bottom place. A heroic effort from their inspirational captain Scott Parker ensured they remain in prime form in the relegation battle which seems to go down the wire. In Eastlands , Manchester City’s dreams of finishing the season as winners went up in smoke as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham who exacted sweet revenge for Mark Hughes .
The focus how shifts to Stamford Bridge for the crucial game which is sure to be a blockbuster.
