After the Davis Cup victory over Janko Tipsarevic, Somdev is really at peak of his form.
Somdev has qualified for the BNP Paribas Open and has reached the third round. The Indian number 1 defeated Marcos Baghdatis in the second round who is ranked 22nd in the world. The Indian fought hard and defeated Baghdatis in straight sets. Somdev won the 2nd round match 7-6, 6-0.
Somdev is currently ranked 84th and will face 52nd ranked Xavier Malisse in the round of 16. The Belgian is a strong right hand player and will make it tough for Somdev in the upcoming match. If Somdev beats Malisse then he has a chance of playing Rafael Nadal in the pre-quarterfinals. This is a great opportunity for the Indian ace to play the World number 1 and learn from the experience.
2011 has been a great year for him as he reaches the finals of the South African Open and defeated Tipsarevic in the Davis Cup. He also played Roger Federer in the second round of Dubai Open. He is hoping to break into top 50 this year, this could be possible looking at his current form.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that Somdev clears the next hurlde and plays Nadal and defeats him.
