California: Keeping India’s hope alive in the Indian Wells is Sania Mirza who with her Russian partner Elena Vesnina stormed into the women’s doubles final late on Thursday.
Mirza-Vesnina beat Daniela Hantuchova and Agnieszka Radwanska 6-0, 6-4 in a pretty one-sided match.
On the other hand, the Indo-Pak Express of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi were stunned by Belgian Xavier Malisse and Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 3-6, 8-10 in the semifinals. The match went down to the wire with the Ukrainian-Belgian pair sealing off the issue in the super tie-break.
Bopanna and Qureshi, ranked 15th, had a successful week here, which included a famous win against World No.2 Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in an earlier round.
In the finals of the $4.5-million Indian Wells WTA event, the Indo- Russian pair will compete for the main prize with Megan Shaughnessy and Betany Mattek-Sands of the United States who sailed into the finals after their rivals Maria Kirilenko of Russia and Victoria Azarenko of Belarus had to pull out over Azarenko’s injury.
