Fabio Capello has reinstated Chelsea’s inspirational captain, John Terry as the captain of the England Football team amid some pressing concerns over who should lead England against Wales this Saturday in the EURO 2012 qualifying match. And this decision is a permanent one ending a 13 month long issue over the captaincy of the Three Lions. With John Terry receiving support from some quarters and the team management itself, it has been a week to remember for the talisman who has always lead the English team with or without the armband.
The decision comes in after Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard have both been ruled out of the match citing injuries. And with the armband passing from one player to another in the match against Denmark which caused some uproar over the importance of the Captain of the Three Lions, Capello wasted no time in declaring Terry as the permanent captain and barring any controversial or on field issues, he would be leading the country into the Euro 2012 championships next June.
However it is now time to ponder whether this has actually been a right decision. It is quite obvious that although the national team has a lot of captaincy material, yet Terry is one of the most inspirational figures in the dressing room and has time in again proved his leadership qualities at the club and the country level. And he has served his due punishment having suffered a huge loss of face and humiliated personally as well as stripped of the honour of captaining the side into the World Cup 2010. Yet he has come out unscathed and fully determined in helping the cause of the Three Lions. I believe it is a decision in the right direction. It’s not that Rio Ferdinand has done a terrible job. But resolving this issue is a right step towards their dream of lifting the trophy next summer.
It remains to be seen whether the choice is a good one but Fabio Capello surely knows what he is doing as he is determined to bring glory back to England.
