India’s rising tennis star, Somdev Devvarman reaches the finals of the South African Open by defeating Izak Van der Merwe by 6-2, 64 on Saturday. The key player at the tournament, Somdev has already defeated Rik de Voest and Van der Merwe at the 2009 Davis Cup tournament.
Varman spent more time winning the first set, breaking serves in the first and third game. Merwe had a chance to grab the second game by a straight back but Dev salvaged two break points.
Devvarman gave his second hit shot at the third game which went on for 10 minutes. The subsequent five games went with the serves to give the 25 year old Indian the set and quieten fast filling center court crowd dreaming of first finals in 18 years.
Both the players held serve for their first three games before Varman broke at the seventh game. That proved decisive as the next three games went with serve and the Indian swiped into the final.
